And knowledge is power. The first line of defense against breast cancer is self examination. Beginning at age 20, monthly breast self examinations should be performed to detect any abnormalities. Any abnormalities detected should be immediately reported to your physician for further screening and diagnosis. Educate yourself by performing self examinations. The power of knowing what is normal vs. abnormal about your breasts is in your hands and that knowledge could save your life.

The most common cancer among women...

is breast cancer and the statistics concerning breast cancer in this country are alarming.

  • All women are at risk for breast cancer.

  • Not all women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of the disease.
  • 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer over their lifetime.
  • Every three minutes, one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Every thirteen minutes, one woman dies of breast cancer in the United States.
  • There are 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

There is also much good news. The death rate has been declining. The decline is attributable largely to early detection and better treatment. However, both early detection and better treatment are dependent on access to health care. That access is limited. The Florida Breast Health Initiative exists to help bridge the gap.

The Florida Breast Health Initiative (FBHI) focuses on the importance of breast health using a proactive, preventative approach against breast cancer. Our mission is to provide free breast health awareness, education, screening and referrals though neighborhood door to door outreach to uninsured, underserved women in an effort to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease.

Together we can make a difference! So, when you see a dedicated FBHI volunteer, please open the door, it could save your life.
